The Social Media Termination

One tweet. One post. One comment. That may be all it takes to put your job at risk.

In Ontario, employees have the right to express opinions online. But that right is not unlimited. Social media activity that harms an employer’s reputation, breaches workplace policies, or creates a toxic environment can lead to discipline—or even termination – on the employment context. In serious cases, termination without severance may be justified.

So, we ask ourselves the question: Can you lose your job for what you share on social media?

In Ontario, employees can express their opinions online, but certain online activities could result in termination if they damage the employer’s reputation, create a toxic environment, or disrupt the workplace. If the comment is serious enough, it could justify termination with no severance.

When Social Media Crosses the Line

1.Discriminatory or harassing comments that surface publicly and get reported by clients or colleagues.

2.Posts that undermine the company’s business or values, especially where they contradict the employer’s code of conduct.

3.Sharing confidential or sensitive information, in violation of professional or contractual obligations.

Why This Matters
For employees → your online voice is powerful, but it can carry professional consequences
For employers → clear social media and conduct policies are essential to set expectations and enforce boundaries fairly.

The digital world doesn’t stop at the workplace door. What you post can follow you into the office.
